Update: 8 mo & going strong! I now have an emotional attachment to this product as it allowed me to keep my elderly, 19 yr old cat safely comfortable at home when she reached the end of her days & she could no longer maintain her body temperature without help. I was able to set this up for her & still get some sleep, & was able leave the house as needed with everything running, without the concern that unregulated devices would cause. Without it, I would have been strongly compelled to bring my cat in to put her down, & given how much she hates the vet that is the last that I would have wanted for her final hours. Instead, she was bedded down in a box so she felt safe, and this Inkbird kept her temperature in the best range. That allowed us to focus on other things, like her favorite sounds and scents, so we could surround her with all that extra goodness and love. I never expected to use the device this way, and now I'm forever grateful for it. She is missed terribly; the memories of how we were able to tend her and give her the most comfortable and peaceful ending are now our comfort in that grief. Thank you, Inkbird Tech. That cat grew up with my children, saw me through recovery from 3 major surgeries and was such a wonderful being and match for us in more ways that I can relate, here. She deserved this, you made it possible, and I hope that you read these reviews from time to time so that you see this, too. Thank you. Thank you.

Initial unedited review: This product has been in use for 4 months, to monitor and control the temperature for petri dishes, seed starting, and plant growth. It would be useful for those doing hydroponics, aquaponics, raising fungi, using a greenhouse, or heating and cooling a space for humans and/or pets. I've been very pleased with all applications that I have tried. The set-up for this product is amazingly easy. It will display in F or C, whichever you set. The desired temperature as well as the acceptable range are programmed as you like, so this is completely customized. The product has been reliably turning on and off the heating and cooling as needed, and has not allowed the temperature to get out of the set range that I programmed, ever. This is monitored with a different device, and it has been accurate. It has taken a while for it to gain my trust, as I am cautious with anything of this nature. First I turned over the controls while sleeping. Now I use this all the time, even if I leave the house. I do not allow a simple timer to do that with a heating device; since this one ensures a set range, that is safer. I also use a heater that also has it's own automatic shut-off. On it's own, my heater would go higher than the range that I required, though it would not continue up into an unsafe range (it could kill some plants, and dry things out). It is important to layer these safety features and use trustworthy appliances.
The display on this device is simple and thoughtful. The bright LED display is large; I love the convenience of the display, as I can read it across the room. It is bright enough to be clearly visible in strong light or in darkness, and every light level in between. Sweet! (I wear corrective lenses, these put my vision into the normal range). It displays both the desired temperature that you set, and the temperature that is being read. It has been showing two digits and one decimal, as well as either the C or F units. The range on the label indicates -58 to 210 F / -50 to 99.9 C. I have not had the occasion to measure triple digit or negative temperatures so I cannot tell you how the display would behave in those conditions.
This device has a devoted cord with a generous length (I'd estimate 5 feet, have not measured this). A second, short cord provides two clearly labeled, 3-prong outlets that allow you to plug in one heating device and one cooling device. It will function with devices that have only 2-prongs, and it will function whether you have attached devices, or not. Of course, without any devices it cannot alter the temperature, and so it would simply function as a thermometer. If you have set a temperature range under those conditions, you would hear it click to attempt to turn on a device, and it would continue to try to do so. I do not know if that would affect the life of the device, and so I recommend that if you decide to use it in this way that you set a large enough temperature range that it is not clicking. A person might decide to do that for the benefit of this display, that has better visibility than any thermometer that I have ever seen. The thermostat probe/sensor is on a slender cord that is several feet long (I haven't measured it- looks like 4 or 5 feet), and allows you to monitor temperature inside a closed container, while keeping the device outside of that container. It could monitor the temperature outside by running the sensor outside of a window or door (assuming that your weather-stripping will allow you to do this without damaging the cord).
The display housing is molded, heavy-duty plastic, and can be hung up on a nail. The hole that allows you to do this is visible in the picture. It is thinner plastic, and extends along the back edge, so your nail does not need to be terribly long. The plastic with that hole does not swivel, and over time plastic can become brittle. If you want to be able to turn this while it is hung up, then you'll need to hang it onto something that will give you that option without undo pressure that could crack the plastic. The plug that is used to attach the heating and cooling devices also accommodates being hung up onto a nail.
The buttons used to set the device are sealed under the label, so moisture and particulates cannot get in there. The entire housing is well protected that way (if you are considering outdoor use, you'd best look into whether that is recommended. I use this inside). The plastic is quite smooth. When you push a button there is an audible click for feedback that you have done so. Buttons need to be held down for a few seconds. Because of that, it is unlikely that any accidental pressing would initiate any program changes.
Accessibility: The buttons are widely spaced; those with large fingers will have no problem. You do need to be able to hold down the buttons for a few seconds. It doesn't take much strength to do that; it does take a degree of steadiness. It is easy to operate this with one hand, by cradling it in the fingers and using the thumb on that same hand for the controls. If that isn't workable, yet you could hold it and use the opposite elbow, that definitely works. (Yes, I tried it!). It wouldn't be entirely impossible to set this up without being able to hold it, and if that is something that you need to do then you would need to consider how you will secure this device into position while you are doing so. The molded hole for hanging this up would not hold up to that sort of treatment, and all of the cords are dedicated (not removable) so those need to be accommodated in the arrangement. If this can be set up and you do not need to change it for your own purposes, then it can be set and just left. It has not timed out, required a re-set or anything like that. Those with low vision may find that this display is quite workable for them. The large size, great contrast and brightness are all in favor of that. There may be those who are able to take the readings just fine, though require help to set this up, as reading the directions and the labels on the outlets for the appliances could be difficult or unworkable with limited vision. Once set up, this can be left alone unless you are going to require changes. If visual issues are a concern, then be sure to check the current return policy, just in case, and know that if you have some vision then there is a good chance of this working out.
More technical stuff: Input and output are labeled the same: 100 - 265 VAC, 50 Hz - 60 Hz. Current: 10A max. CE, FC, ROHS.
I paid full retail price for this product, and have no interest, relationship, blog, or profit in the sale of this item. I'm a happy customer, period. I hope that this review is helpful to you as you're making your decisions. Enjoy your shopping!
And now, a few notes about the device, some of which are in response to comments made here by other reviewers:
Setup of the device is easy once you have spent two minutes reading the instructions. However, as is true of the vast majority of instruction/user manuals that accompany devices such as this that are made in China, the printed instruction/user manual provided with the device is nearly useless, due to the fact that it is so small in size and consequently the print font is very tiny and difficult to read. So, I did not even bother to try deciphering the nearly-impossible to read user manual that came with the device, and rather, I went online and found the InkBird website, at http://ink-bird.com, and then quickly located the downloadable manual for this device in PDF file format, at http://ink-bird.com/asset/file/ITC-308%20V2.1%20EN.pdf , downloaded it, and printed the three most important pages to me out of the six pages in the manual.
The cord on the remote temperature sensor is a bit over 6 feet long; I provide this information because others have asked about the length of the cord on the temperature probe.
Although one or two other reviewers have stated that they feel that the temperature display of this device reads about 1 degree C too high (compared to reliable & accurate thermometers), this has not been my experience. I have found the temperature calibration of this device to be very accurate; it is totally in agreement with my other digital thermometers.
Please be aware that while the ambient temperature display shows temperature in 0.1 degree (F or C) increments, as does the Set/Target Temperature display, the Set (i.e., target) temperature can only be set in one degree integer increments. So, you can select a Set temperature of 90.0 degrees, or 91.0 degrees, but you cannot select a Set temperature of 90.4 degrees.
These units work great, the displays and thermostatic function are very accurate, and the units are very reliable. I would buy more for other applications in a second if any such need arose.
One merely has to program the minimum and maximum temperature that is suitable. There are two electrical outlets labeled heating and cooling, and this is where you plug in the power for your heating and cooling systems, respectively. So for example, you could plug in a space heater and a AC unit, and when the temp gets too low, the heater is turned on automatically. When the temp gets too high, the AC unit is turned on automatically. When the temp reaches the programmed ideal, both units are powered off.
There is a separate temperature probe which can be placed roughly 6-7 feet away from the unit, to more accurately measure the temperature.
The unit has two screens, which will display different information, according to what you are doing, programming or simply checking the monitor. In most cases, one of the screens will display the current temperature, and the target temperature. There are also round LEDs which indicate at a glance whether the unit is in heating or cooling mode.
From the day the unit arrived, it was worked perfectly, without a hitch. For an indoor hydroponic garden, temperature is important, and one can rest easy relying on this unit to control the temperature.
PROS:
+ Separate temperature probe for added accuracy
+ Easy to program
+ Easy to read main screens from a distance
+ Labelled outlets for the cooling system and the heating system
+ Wall mountable with a screw (not included)
+ Sturdy construction
+ Programming documentation included
CONS:
- Probe cable is only about 6-7 feet in length.
Top reviews from other countries
I have not found a solution for anywhere near the price of this unit.
Simple and easy to use, take a look on YouTube for a video example: it will take you 2-3 minutes to set this up to do whatever it is you need.
In my case, I built a highly insulated shed that needs a 500W heater turned on 1-4 times per day (based on the outdoor temperature / overall heatloss!) for 1 hour to keep the contents above 8°C. This little unit works perfectly!
The unit did need temperature calibration out of the box, it was reading exactly 1.0°C high, but the unit allows easy compensation to read accurately. The thermocouple does have quite a bit of thermal mass bonded to it, in my use case that's fine: I want the mass of the sensor to lag the actual air temperature by a few seconds / minutes to help average out the indoor space temp.
Overall 10/10: perfect little heating controller for light loads; I would not personally run a heating load all the way up to 10A on this unit, it just doesn't have the mass to support such a claim. I'm sure it can _technically_ do 10A for short periods, but to prevent any risks or issues, I'd absolutely keep the load under 6-7A resistive loads max. If you're trying to run a (not remotely rated for!) 120VAC 1.5kW heater on this thing: you're going to melt it for sure.
